A birthday gift has blossomed into a thriving small business that’s bringing personalized creativity to homes across western Massachusetts. For Meghan O’Donnell, owner of Breghan Creations in Southampton, what started as a casual crafting hobby has grown into a deeply fulfilling passion — and a community-supported enterprise.

“Breghan Creations began as a simple hobby that quickly turned into a true passion,” O’Donnell said. “It all started when my husband bought me a Cricut machine for my birthday and I instantly fell in love with creating custom pieces for family and friends. Over time, my projects grew from paper crafts into more wood-based creations, thanks to the help of my husband, who’s a carpenter. We started experimenting with laser engraving and woodworking, and from there, Breghan Creations really took shape.”

The name “Breghan” is itself a symbol of collaboration—a blend of Meghan and her husband Brian’s names. “It feels fitting, since this business has truly been a shared effort from the start,” she said. “Launching here in Southampton felt natural because it’s home.”

From the homegrown beginnings, Breghan Creations has evolved into a destination for beautifully crafted, custom-made pieces. O’Donnell specializes in laser-engraved products ranging from ornaments and nursery signs to wedding décor and personalized gifts.

“What makes my work stand out is the personal touch behind every item,” she explained. “I love creating pieces that feel meaningful and unique to each customer, something that represents their story, family, or special moment. I think people can tell that everything I make is crafted with care, creativity, and a genuine love for what I do.”

That sense of connection — to both craft and customer — is at the heart of O’Donnell’s creative process. Many of her ideas come directly from those who reach out with special requests.

“A lot of my inspiration comes directly from my customers,” she said. “Many of my products started as custom requests. Someone would message me with an idea, and I’d bring it to life. I love the challenge of taking someone’s vision and turning it into something tangible.”

She also draws inspiration from everyday life, her own family, and other makers.

“Making gifts for my own family, seeing creative ideas from other makers, or even just noticing design trends that spark new ideas — my process is always evolving, and that’s part of what keeps it exciting.”

For O’Donnell, the Southampton community has played a vital role in Breghan Creations’ success, adding the local community has been “amazing” in their support.
“I’ve built a strong base of repeat customers who come back whenever they’re looking for a personalized gift or custom piece. Their word-of-mouth support has really helped my business grow,” she added.

Her involvement with Feel Good Shop Local, a regional network that promotes small businesses, has expanded her reach beyond Southampton. The network helps people reach more of the best products made from the independent merchants and local makers of the area, all helping make it easier to support local businesses while still getting valued items.

“Joining Feel Good Shop Local has opened doors to new opportunities and allowed me to connect with a wider network of customers across neighboring communities. It’s been great to see how supportive people are of small, local businesses.”

Like many small business owners, O’Donnell has faced her share of challenges and learned valuable lessons along the way.

“One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that growth takes time, and patience is key,” she said. “It’s easy to compare yourself to others, but staying focused on your own progress is so important. I’ve also learned to embrace trial and error; not every idea works out the first time, and that’s okay. Every mistake has helped me improve my products and processes.”

Above all, she’s discovered the importance of maintaining balance. “Running a creative business means learning to manage time, stay organized, and still find joy in the work.”

Despite the challenges, it’s the joy of creation — and the meaning behind each project — that keeps O’Donnell motivated.

“What I love most is knowing that something I create will become a meaningful gift or keepsake for someone else,” she said. “Whether it’s a personalized sign for a new baby’s nursery or a custom ornament for a family’s first Christmas together, being part of those special moments is incredibly rewarding.”

For O’Donnell, Breghan Creations is also a creative balance to her full-time job in social media management. “It allows me to slow down, work with my hands, and express a different side of my creativity. Seeing how much people appreciate and connect with my work keeps me motivated to keep learning and growing.”

As Breghan Creations continues to expand, O’Donnell is excited about new directions for the business — particularly collaborations with other local enterprises.

“Looking ahead, one of my main goals is to grow the business-to-business side of Breghan Creations,” she said. “I’ve started working more with local businesses to create custom branded and promotional products — things like engraved signage, logo keychains, ornaments, and client gifts. It’s been exciting to see how my products can help other businesses elevate their branding and connect with their customers in a more personal way.”

She also hopes to strengthen partnerships within the creative community. “Whether it’s teaming up with other local makers or supplying products for events and shops, I see a lot of opportunity to expand Breghan Creations in ways that support and highlight other small businesses too.”

As her business grows, O’Donnell remains deeply grateful for the people who have supported her journey.

“I just want to say how grateful I am for the support I’ve received from the local community — from customers who’ve shared my work to family and friends who’ve helped me along the way. Breghan Creations started as a small creative hobby, and it’s turned into something so much more. I’m excited to see where it continues to go!”

With her talent for turning simple materials into keepsakes full of heart, Meghan O’Donnell’s Breghan Creations continues to prove that when passion meets purpose — and community — beautiful things happen.
